Antarctic Charters

For many years Compass Airlines has operated a number of Antarctic Charter flights. Again over the 17-18 summer season will will conduct these flights from major Australian and New Zealand cities and fly to the edge of the polar ice pack. Flights from Australia fly along the Antarctic coast towards the east, fly over the ice pack across the Trans-Antarctic Mountains, fly close to McMurdo Station and then back along the coast to the west before heading home. Flights from New Zealand head south to McMurdo from Christchurch and then along the ice pack to the west, before returning towards McMurdo and then north back to New Zealand.

The following resources will help you plan and conduct the flights

Equipment

All flights will be conducted using the B747-400ER, the A380-800 or the A340-500 depending on bookings, but any Compass pilot, regardless of rank my bid for and operate these flights. This year pilots may also operate these flights using the MD11.

Fuel

The flights ex Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Auckland and Christchurch will probably be able to be completed non-stop and return to the port of origin. The flights ex-Brisbane and Perth will probably require a re-fueling stop at on the return leg (Brisbane flights use Hobart, Perth flights use Hobart or Adelaide). This stop is made at pilot discretion. The first test flight conducted on 19 Dec 00 encountered 90 - 120 knot headwinds for much of the flight.

Customs & Immigration

As these flights depart from and arrive at the same port, they are domestic flights. Pilots should use the Domestic terminals at each airport.

Compass

Your magnetic compass will do funny things during this flight. Due to the proximity of the South Magnetic Pole at times you will be heading south, but your compass will be giving a northerly reading. This is to be expected and is surprisingly well modeled in FS.
